Penicillin G – 10 μg Antibiotic Disc – Bioanalyse
Penicillin G – 10 μg Antibiotic Disc – Bioanalyse is a paper disc impregnated with 10 micrograms of penicillin G, a narrow-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic. It is used in the disc diffusion method of antimicrobial susceptibility testing to determine the susceptibility of bacteria to penicillin G.
Penicillin G is effective against a variety of Gram-positive bacteria, including:
- Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Streptococcus pyogenes
- Streptococcus viridans
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Staphylococcus epidermidis
Penicillin G is also effective against some Gram-negative bacteria, such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis.
Interpretation of results:
| Zone of inhibition | Interpretation | |—|—|—| | ≥ 29 mm | Susceptible | | 22-28 mm | Intermediate | | < 22 mm | Resistant |
Limitations:
- The disc diffusion method is only a semi-quantitative method for testing the susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics. For more accurate results, other methods such as broth microdilution or agar dilution should be used.
- The disc diffusion method is not able to detect all bacteria that are resistant to penicillin G. For example, some strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae are resistant to penicillin G, but they may not produce a zone of inhibition around a penicillin G disc.
- The disc diffusion method can be affected by the type of agar plate used, the incubation temperature, and the inoculum density. Therefore, it is important to follow standardized procedures when performing the disc diffusion test.
Important safety information:
- Penicillin G is a beta-lactam antibiotic, and people who are allergic to beta-lactam antibiotics should not take penicillin G.
- Penicillin G can cause serious side effects, such as seizures and allergic reactions.
- Penicillin G should be used with caution in people with liver disease or kidney disease.
