Vancomycin – 30 μg Antibiotic Disc – Bioanalyse
Vancomycin – 30 μg Antibiotic Disc – Bioanalyse is a paper disc impregnated with 30 micrograms of vancomycin, a glycopeptide antibiotic. It is used in the disc diffusion method of antimicrobial susceptibility testing to determine the susceptibility of bacteria to vancomycin.
Vancomycin is a last-line antibiotic, meaning that it is used to treat infections that have not responded to other antibiotics. It is also used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Vancomycin is used to treat a variety of infections, including:
- MRSA infections
- Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) infections
- Clostridium difficile infections
- Endocarditis
- Meningitis
- Bone and joint infections
- Intra-abdominal infections
- Sepsis
Vancomycin is also used to prevent infections before surgery.
Interpretation of results:
Zone of inhibition | Interpretation |
---|---|
≥ 17 mm | Susceptible |
13-16 mm | Intermediate |
< 13 mm | Resistant |
Limitations:
- The disc diffusion method is only a semi-quantitative method for testing the susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics. For more accurate results, other methods such as broth microdilution or agar dilution should be used.
- The disc diffusion method is not able to detect all bacteria that are resistant to vancomycin. For example, some strains of Enterococcus faecium are resistant to vancomycin, but they may not produce a zone of inhibition around a vancomycin disc.
- The disc diffusion method can be affected by the type of agar plate used, the incubation temperature, and the inoculum density. Therefore, it is important to follow standardized procedures when performing the disc diffusion test.
Important safety information:
-
Vancomycin is a potent antibiotic, and it can cause a number of side effects, including:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Rash
- Kidney damage
- Hearing loss
- Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis
-
Vancomycin can also interact with other medications, so it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist about all of the medications you are taking before starting vancomycin.
