Ticarcillin/Clavulanic Acid – 85 μg Antibiotic Disc – Bioanalyse
Ticarcillin/Clavulanic Acid – 85 μg Antibiotic Disc – Bioanalyse is a paper disc impregnated with 85 micrograms of ticarcillin and 17.5 micrograms of clavulanic acid, a combination antibiotic. It is used in the disc diffusion method of antimicrobial susceptibility testing to determine the susceptibility of bacteria to ticarcillin/clavulanic acid.
Ticarcillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin-class antibiotic, and clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. The combination of ticarcillin and clavulanic acid is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as bacteria that produce beta-lactamases, enzymes that can break down penicillin antibiotics.
Ticarcillin/clavulanic acid is used to treat a variety of infections, including:
- Urinary tract infections
- Respiratory infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Intra-abdominal infections
- Sepsis
- Meningitis
Ticarcillin/clavulanic acid is also used to prevent infections before surgery.
Interpretation of results:
Zone of inhibition | Interpretation |
---|---|
≥ 22 mm | Susceptible |
17-21 mm | Intermediate |
< 17 mm | Resistant |
Limitations:
- The disc diffusion method is only a semi-quantitative method for testing the susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics. For more accurate results, other methods such as broth microdilution or agar dilution should be used.
- The disc diffusion method is not able to detect all bacteria that are resistant to ticarcillin/clavulanic acid. For example, some strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa are resistant to ticarcillin/clavulanic acid, but they may not produce a zone of inhibition around a ticarcillin/clavulanic acid disc.
- The disc diffusion method can be affected by the type of agar plate used, the incubation temperature, and the inoculum density. Therefore, it is important to follow standardized procedures when performing the disc diffusion test.
Important safety information:
-
Ticarcillin/clavulanic acid is a potent antibiotic, and it can cause a number of side effects, including:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Rash
- Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis
-
Ticarcillin/clavulanic acid can also interact with other medications, so it is important to tell your doctor or pharmacist about all of the medications you are taking before starting ticarcillin/clavulanic acid.
