Piperacillin/Tazobactam – 40 μg Antibiotic Disc – Bioanalyse
Piperacillin/Tazobactam – 40 μg Antibiotic Disc – Bioanalyse is a paper disc impregnated with 40 micrograms of a combination of piperacillin, a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic, and tazobactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It is used in the disc diffusion method of antimicrobial susceptibility testing to determine the susceptibility of bacteria to piperacillin/tazobactam.
Piperacillin/tazobactam is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is used to treat a variety of infections, including:
- Urinary tract infections
- Respiratory infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Intra-abdominal infections
- Sepsis
- Meningitis
Piperacillin/tazobactam is also used to prevent infections before surgery.
Interpretation of results:
| Zone of inhibition | Interpretation | |—|—|—| | ≥ 17 mm | Susceptible | | 13-16 mm | Intermediate | | < 13 mm | Resistant |
Limitations:
- The disc diffusion method is only a semi-quantitative method for testing the susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics. For more accurate results, other methods such as broth microdilution or agar dilution should be used.
- The disc diffusion method is not able to detect all bacteria that are resistant to piperacillin/tazobactam. For example, some strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa are resistant to piperacillin/tazobactam, but they may not produce a zone of inhibition around a piperacillin/tazobactam disc.
- The disc diffusion method can be affected by the type of agar plate used, the incubation temperature, and the inoculum density. Therefore, it is important to follow standardized procedures when performing the disc diffusion test.
Important safety information:
- Piperacillin/tazobactam is a beta-lactam antibiotic, and people who are allergic to beta-lactam antibiotics should not take piperacillin/tazobactam.
- Piperacillin/tazobactam can cause serious side effects, such as seizures and allergic reactions.
- Piperacillin/tazobactam should be used with caution in people with liver disease or kidney disease.
