Cholesterol plays an essential role in the stability and architecture of the plasma membrane and as a precursor for bile acid and steroid hormone synthesis in mammals. Serum cholesterol is derived from the diet and is synthesized in the liver. The LDL/HDL ratio are taken in consideration for evaluating the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
